Sheffield’s changing CBD

How has Sheffield’s central business district (CBD) changed in response to its big out-of-town shopping centre, Meadowhall? This article is a case study relevant to two GCSE topics: regeneration of the CBD and retail changes in town centres

In 1990 the Meadowhall shopping centre was built on the edge of Sheffield, on the site of an old steel works. It was hoped Meadowhall would bring jobs and greater prosperity to the city. During the 1980s many steel factories had closed and thousands of jobs had been lost as production moved abroad where labour costs were cheaper. Although Sheffield still manufactures specialised steel, far fewer people are now employed in manufacturing than 50 years ago while many more have jobs in service industries.
