Gravel quarrying

This Down My Way looks at plans for quarrying in a village in Warwickshire, and discusses the likely impacts on the land and the people

Figure 1 Proposed excavation site in Wasperton, and locations of sites of archaelogical significance

Three years ago the peace and serenity of the village of Wasperton in Warwickshire was threatened, when residents were first informed of quarrying plans. The development company, Hanson Products, plans to dig up 91 hectares of green fields just 250 metres from the village (see Figure 1) to obtain sand and gravel for use in the production of readymixed concrete and mortar.

It is proposed that a total of 200,000 tonnes of minerals will be taken from the ground each year. Transportation would be by road, adding 140 vehicles each day to already crowded roads. The quarrying is likely to last 7–11 years, with an additional 3 years for the site to be put right afterwards.
