Attitude surveys

This Fieldwork Focus considers the ways in which data about people’s attitudes and opinions can be collected. These kind of data can provide interesting perspectives on geographical issues, helping to explain the reasons behind decisions or actions taken by people

Designing suitable and varied datacollection methods is a good way of demonstrating your geographical skills and understanding. Multiple data sources will assist with your analysis, enabling you to cross-reference your findings. The attitude surveys described here are often incorporated into questionnaires and you should seek to obtain responses from at least 30 people. (See WIDEWORLD Vol. 23, No. 2, pp. 18–19 for advice on devising questionnaires.)

A Likert scale seeks to establish the strength and direction of someone’s opinion on an issue by providing a trigger statement or prompt. Respondents are usually asked to provide a numerical reply, based on descriptions that match the strength of their agreement or disagreement with the statement. An example Likert question, to obtain opinions on tourist facilities, might be:
