E lectricity generation using fossil fuels is one of the major contributors to carbon emissions worldwide and therefore to global climate change. The UK government has agreed to reduce its carbon emissions by 50% by 2025.

Over 60% of the electricity we use is produced by burning fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas. Not only are supplies of these fuels increasingly costly to obtain but they are gradually running out. The UK supplies only a small proportion of its own energy requirements, relying on supplies from other countries, for which it has to compete in the global marketplace.
