Managing water resources in Las Alpujarras

Managing water resources is a growing problem in many parts of the world. This case study looks at the issues in one area of Spain

Las Alpujarras is a mountainous region in Andalucia, southern Spain (Figure 1). The valleys are some of the most fertile in the country, due to its warm climate and runoff from the Sierra Nevada mountains.

Dotted across the whole landscape in Las Alpujarras are a series of irrigation channels called acequias, constructed by the Moors at the end of the fifteenth century. These are gravity chutes made of bricks or stone that channel the water down to the fields, with gates that open and close on certain days of the week at set times. As water is not flowing permanently, water loss by evaporation is not a major concern for the locals.
