How green is Glastonbury?

GCSE geography courses require an understanding of sustainability. This article looks at how the organisers of the Glastonbury Festival try to encourage festival traders to be more environmentally friendly.

Our current levels of consumption are damaging the planet, so people are becoming increasingly aware of the environmental impact of everyday activities. In order to increase levels of sustainability there has been a marked rise in ‘green’ consumerism, and there is evidence of this in music festivals as well as on the high street. Glastonbury and other festivals are marketing themselves as environmentally friendly, but how far is this really the case?

Festivals are growing in popularity and it is estimated that 1 in 10 British adults attends at least one festival each year. People are drawn to festivals to have a good time, to listen to live music and to experience the unique atmosphere and positive vibes. However, many festival-goers do not stop to consider the environmental impact their enjoyment creates.
