High-speed rail

Good communications are increasingly important in the modern age. Fast and efficient rail links can play a significant role in the economy and reduce pollution and congestion.

High-speed trains already run on the existing channel tunnel route

How would you feel about travelling to work at 400 km per hour? In 15 years’ time you could be doing just that. Trains are already travelling at these speeds through the channel tunnel and now the government has given the go-ahead to build a similar line from London to Birmingham, which may eventually go onwards to the north of England (Figure 1). This line is known as High Speed 2 (HS2). A further extension of high-speed rail to Scotland is possible in the longer term. However, the plan has some critics.

The government believes that highspeed rail is a solution to two major and increasing problems in England.
