In 1970 Trinity College at Cambridge University launched an initiative to establish the UK’s first science park. It was to be built on derelict land owned by the college and the purpose was to encourage the development of new technologies, based on close cooperation between scientists at the university and industries working at the cutting edge of scientific research.
The site was cleared and old gravel pits became the lakes which can be seen in the centre of the photograph. Roads were built around the site and the area was landscaped. The first company, Laser Scan, moved onto the site in 1973 and by 1980, 24 others had followed. The environment was seen as important right from the start and the whole site — with its grassed areas, trees and water features — is carefully managed, as can be seen in this recent photograph. The landscaped areas cover almost one-eighth of the site.
