Obtaining reliable and relevant data is important for successful fieldwork in geography. Questionnaires are one of the most widely used data collection techniques, since they can be effective in obtaining large amounts of easy to interpret numerical (quantitative) data. Incorporating a range of question styles can capture a variety of rich responses, including qualitative data. Figure 1 shows an annotated questionnaire which could be used in a shopping survey.
Questionnaires require careful thought about the actual questions to be included. Start with a brief introduction, explaining who you are and what you are doing.
