Hill Holt wood is no ordinary woodland. It is run with the aim of preserving the natural environment by growing timber in an environmentally friendly way. What is striking is the way in which its timber is used and the relationship between the woodland and local people. The 14 hectares of privately owned deciduous woodland is located between Lincoln and Newark, near the village of Norton Disney (Figure 1). Within the woodland is a sawmill and an innovative, environmentally friendly building for the local community.
Some trees within the site are cut for timber, but much of the wood used in the sawmill comes from nearby Skellingthorpe wood. Any trees that are logged are replaced with saplings, ensuring the long-term survival of both woods. Once in the sawmill, the timber is used to create a range of products, which are then used and sold locally, providing much-needed jobs in the rural community and helping the local economy. The most direct use of the sawmill has been to shape timber used in the creation of the community building on the site.
