case study

Benidorm

This useful case study gives reasons for the growth of tourism, its effects and the strategies to ensure its continued success

Benidorm is on the Costa Blanca in Valencia province, Spain (Figure 1). Its name has become associated with cheap holidays involving sun, sand, sea and entertainment — it attracts about 5 million visitors each year and is especially popular with British, Belgian and Dutch tourists. Benidorm’s permanent population is estimated at 74,000, but with about 60,000 beds available in hotels and apartments and a 90% occupancy rate, its population is always far higher, especially in summer.

However, this was not always the case: at the beginning of the 1960s Benidorm was a quiet village. Table 1 illustrates Benidorm’s rapid population growth.
