Case study

Sustainable urban living in Malmö

Sustainable living is an important part of GCSE geography courses and a challenge for all governments. This case study of Malmö in Sweden shows how the city is becoming sustainable, benefiting its inhabitants economically, environmentally and socially.

‘Turning Torso’ was built with sustainable living in mind

Asustainable city is an urban area where residents enjoy a way of life that will last a long time with minimal damage to the environment. Malmö is the commercial centre of southern Sweden and is the country’s third largest city (see Figure 1). It is home to 270,000 residents, and over 1 million tourists visit each year. It was one of the first industrialised cities in Sweden and the country’s first fair trade city.

Until recently Malmö was struggling with the decline of its traditional shipbuilding industry. It has now undergone a transition from being an industrial city to a city of knowledge and sustainability.
