The impacts of a new road

This article discusses sustainable development in one of the world’s poorest countries and provides an excellent case study for GCSE courses.

The new road will bring greater numbers of tourists to Manang

The Annapurna Conservation Area (ACA) is located in the Himalayan mountains in north Nepal (see Figure 1) and has a population of approximately 120,000. The conservation area was established in 1986 and is home to a large variety of rare wildlife, including the threatened snow leopard.

The Nepalese government is improving the standard of living for people in this area, through better access to healthcare and education. At the same time it needs to protect the natural environment. It is difficult to balance the development of the area with conservation requirements. This attempt to improve people’s lives without wasting resources or harming the environment is known as sustainable development.
