Mapping crime

The 43 police forces of England and Wales record their crime statistics in such a way that geographers can begin to identify patterns of criminal activity which may correlate with affluence, deprivation and demographics across a city.

Log on to http://maps.met.police.uk, which provides crime statistics for the Metropolitan Police Service of Greater London. The London boroughs are colourcoded according to the key on the left, indicating whether crime is above, below, or average compared with the whole of London. The Map Info box on the right will indicate that the map shows ‘Total Notifiable Offences’ for the most recent month available. Select the menu tab <Crime Types> above the map to explore the patterns of crime, from ‘Burglary’ and ‘Motor vehicle crime’ through to ‘Antisocial behaviour’.
