Did you know that bananas grow in Iceland? That Iceland’s premier tourist attraction is an outdoor swimming pool? And that Iceland is the only country in the world which can obtain 100% of its heat and electricity from renewable sources? These statements are all true and they share a connection — geothermal energy.
Geothermal energy is provided by heat stored naturally in the Earth. The heat originates from the Earth’s core, from local magma intrusions or from the radioactive decay of elements, and it is stored in both solid rock and ground water. It can also naturally appear on the surface as a hot spring or geyser.
