Bluewater

out-of-town shopping centre

The Bluewater shopping centre, opened in March 1999 at Greenhithe in Kent, is the second largest in the UK. In Europe, only Gateshead, Istanbul and Vienna have larger shopping centres.

The centre cost £400 million to build. It has 303 stores, 40 cafés and restaurants, and a cinema. The triangular shape of the centre, which is on two floors, can be seen on the photograph. Over 27 million customers a year visit the centre, which employs 7,000 people. The developers needed to attract major stores known as ‘anchor stores’ (John Lewis, House of Fraser, and Marks and Spencer) to bring customers and other retailers to the centre.
