Case study

The Gulf of Mexico oil spill

This case study looks at the economic and environmental impacts of the oil spill at the BP rig in the Gulf of Mexico in April 2010.

On 20 April 2010 there was an explosion on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig on the Macondo oil field in the Gulf of Mexico (Figure 1). This caused the immediate deaths of 11 crew members. The rig collapsed and sank into the sea. An oil well 2 km deep began leaking into the ocean.

The drilling rig was owned, and operated, by a US company called Transocean on behalf of BP (a UK-based transnational company or TNC). BP owns the oil field where the explosion occurred.
