Log on to the website www.worldmapper.org Here you will find hundreds of maps of the world created by cartographers in the Department of Geography at the University of Sheffield. These cartograms are computer-based representations of countries in which their size depends not on the usual ‘area of land’ basis, but on hundreds of different measures from ‘fish exports’ and ‘women smokers’ to ‘deaths in war’ (see p. 4).
Under ‘Animations’ select the <Land Area to Population> map. You will be presented with a familiar world map, based on land area. Click on the green button at the bottom right of the map — and watch the map inflate and deflate different areas to show countries based on their size of population. The colours of countries remain the same, so if you know where India is on a world map you can keep a fix on it as it changes shape.
