A coral atoll

Reao atoll is home to 344 people and lies within the Tuamotu group of islands in French Polynesia (see Figure 1). The atoll is 24.5 km long and has a maximum width of 5 km. A small airport was opened in 1979.

Reao is a coral atoll — an island made of coral reef with a lagoon in the centre. Corals are small marine organisms that require certain conditions to live and flourish. They are found in shallow salt water at temperatures above 20°C in clear, sediment-free waters which are well supplied with oxygen and plankton.
