A castle, the Burg Katz, built in the fourteenth century and set on a ledge in a commanding position above the Rhine gorge, with barges carrying goods on the river far below
The River Rhine is one of Europe’s great rivers. From its mouth at Rotterdam it is possible to navigate to the Black Sea using its link with the River Danube, and to the Mediterranean Sea via the Rhine–Rhone canal.
Goods have been moved along the Rhine for centuries, taking trade cargoes deep into the heart of the continent. In the past the small states that controlled sections of the river extracted tolls from those moving up or down the river. The states built imposing castles to exert their authority, which now provide a picturesque vista for tourists.
