Atransect is a line or route along which fieldwork data are collected. Transects are useful to give a structured approach to data collection. They can be applied at a variety of different scales, from a small cross-section across a footpath to a long route from the urban–rural fringe into a city centre.
Transects are widely used in both physical and human geography projects. Data may be collected at selected sampling sites along a transect. These can be regular distances along the route or at strategically chosen sampling points. Alternatively, data may be collected along the whole length of the transect. This Fieldwork Focus provides examples of how transects can be used successfully in a range of different studies.
