Did the events of August 2024 show us two different versions of the UK? Or were we seeing two sides of the same coin?

Cast your mind back to August 2024. An unusual set of events, both locally and globally, was drawing public and media attention. Current affairs are always of deep sociological interest, of course, so you should try to stay in touch and apply your own insights. But what happened in the summer of 2024 was perhaps especially relevant for those of us in the sociology business.

Firstly, despite a set of election results in France that suggested the rise of racist and far-right political sentiments and a dangerously divided country on issues of immigration and identity, the city of Paris successfully, and without protest, hosted the 2024 Olympic Games.
