If you are thinking about applying, you will know that competition and entry requirements for Oxford and Cambridge universities — ‘Oxbridge’ — are high. Undergraduate places are disproportionately taken up by students from fee-charging schools. Both these elite universities have faced public scrutiny and criticism from sociologists and others as a result of their socially and academically selective intake. Where is the social mobility mechanism?

Both Oxford and Cambridge have made recent efforts to address these concerns and diversify their student bodies using summer schools and taster sessions. The UK grime artist Stormzy has even set up a diversifying programme of his own to sponsor black students to study at Cambridge University. By 2026, 81 young black people will have benefited from his financial support. Stormzy claims that Oxford University turned down his idea.
