QUESTION AND ANSWER

British Social Attitudes 2023

In this column, we look some of the findings from the 2023 edition of the survey, with exam-style questions and tasks to complete

In 1983, only 17% of respondents thought single-sex relationships were never wrong

Since 1983, the British Social Attitudes survey, published by the National Centre for Social Research (NatCen) has collected data on British people’s attitudes on a wide range of social issues. In 2023, the fortieth anniversary of the publication, the authors looked at how attitudes on certain topics had changed over 40 years. Note, though, that while there has been a liberalisation of some attitudes, there is still no overall consensus — some divisions remain.

Examiners are always looking for examples of students being up to date and showing awareness of the ways in which people’s views on social issues have changed — and the possible reasons why. Complete these exercises in writing, and store the pages in the relevant topic or revision section of your folder. Hopefully you will be able to incorporate some of them, where relevant, into your homework essays and, equally importantly, into your exam answers.
