Numbers are everywhere around us. They are used by politicians, journalists, campaigners and social researchers. They shape our understanding of the world and affect how we perceive ourselves and others around us. Summarising things using numbers — or quantifying them — is crucial when sociologists are looking at anything on a large scale. We cannot properly understand everything in the world around us without being able to use numbers and statistics.
