QUESTION AND ANSWER

How to answer an AQA-style theory 20-mark question

Laura Pountney explores what makes an excellent essay for a theory 20-mark question

This essay could appear at the end of AQA Paper 3, in the Theory and Methods section. It is an opportunity for you to really show that you understand sociological theories well. This may include your knowledge of when the theory emerged, what type of theory it is, what assumptions it makes and also its usefulness in explaining the changes we see in contemporary society. You are expected to be able to evaluate the theory thoroughly and apply contemporary issues that support or challenge the theory.

There are 20 marks available for this question, and you will have roughly 30 minutes to complete your answer. It needs to be well structured and organised and reach a clear conclusion.
