The new framilies

Look beyond the ties of blood and marriage through a new family theory

The term ‘framily’ or ‘framilies’ (plural) is a concept that merges the words ‘friends’ and ‘family’. It refers to the favourite people in our lives, those we would include whether they are blood related or not. This is because usually the relationship is mutually respectful, close and supportive. Framilies are very ‘today’ and very millennial.

The concept of framily challenges the idea that the traditional nuclear family is still the dominant family type, thus ignoring new forms of diversity. More importantly, it highlights the fact that individuals today have some choice in creating family relationships, emphasising the importance of social relationships over genetic ones in forming family-like bonds.
