Perhaps the most famous sociological study on how community links are made and sustained was published around 20-years ago by the American sociologist, Robert Putnam (2000).

Putnam argued that in the USA in the 1990s more people than ever were going to bowling alleys. However, they went irregularly and only with people like themselves, rather than playing in a league setting where they might meet people who are different from them.
