The suggestions in this article will reinforce what your teachers are certainly telling you: there is no short-cut to producing good essays. However, if you keep in mind the points below, and ensure that you complete all the essays that are set during your course, you should be able to display your knowledge and mastery of the skills to good effect in the exam.
Essay questions carry varying marks, depending on the awarding body and the paper concerned, but we are really talking about questions that carry at least 20 marks. You will need to work out how much time you have available by looking at the total number of marks for that paper, the time allowed and the proportion of the total mark allocated to that question. You then need to get used to what you can actually achieve in this time, and the best way of doing that is to write as many essays as possible under timed conditions during your course. In the exam room, keep a close eye on the time, and try not to over-run. Always build in a little time for planning and for re-reading your answer.
