We take a further look at some of the sources of crime data, and what recent figures show

In the last issue of SOCIOLOGY REVIEW we discussed the problem of knowing how much crime is occurring, especially in relation to crimes reported to, recorded by, and ‘screened out’ by the police.This article takes the discussion a stage further by looking at the Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW), the role of the media and the increase in knife crime.

The CSEW is a face-to-face victimisation survey, in which a sample of people resident in England and Wales are asked about their experiences of a selected range of offences in the 12 months leading up to the interview. According to the Home Office:
