The end of the traditional couple?

Infidelity and intimate relationships

Does the liberalisation of ideas around sexuality spell the end for traditional couple relationships? Don’t speak too soon.

monogamy, polyamorous relationships, traditional couple relationships, detraditionalisation, infidelity

This interesting article takes a look at infidelity, a seldom-researched aspect of couple relationships. The author’s research finds that, despite high divorce rates and the prevalence of affairs, there is a strong belief in the importance of traditional couple relationships. Evidence suggests that the ‘detraditionalisation’ of personal relationships is not as common as some theorists suggest, and that people are troubled by the deceit involved in ‘having affairs’. The article reveals the interesting juxtaposition between what people believe is morally ‘right’ and what many of them actually do. This article will be of obvious benefit to those taking the ‘Families and Households’ topic, but also raises issues of gender.
