The grammar school system favours families with more money. The report found that disadvantaged and ‘just about managing’ families were under-represented
One of the arguments put forward by the government for increasing the number of grammar schools is that creating more ‘good school places’ would benefit the education system as a whole and improve social mobility for pupils from less-advantaged backgrounds.
The Sutton Trust is one of a number of organisations to look more closely at whether these and other claims are borne out by the evidence. Their latest report, ‘Gaps in grammar’, was published recently. Below is a summary of some of their findings.
