Media, crime and punishment in the digital age

Do the most modern media forms challenge or extend mainstream media? We explore this question by looking at public opinions of prisons and community sanctions

The research described here looked at people’s opinions of prison versus community service. It explores whether and how exposure to a range of different media messages would alter people’s views. Note the qualitative method used — focus groups — and the different stages of the research. It is also important to note how difficult the researchers found it to challenge people’s acceptance of the mainstream media focus on imprisonment as the main form of sanction.

This article is of particular relevance to those taking the ‘Mass media’ topic, but also has useful material for the topic of ‘Crime and deviance’.
