If you have already taken the first paper for AS AQA sociology, have decided not to keep your grade and have moved onto the A-level, you will have to sit the equivalent A-level paper at the end of your course. The A-level Paper 1 will be familiar in some ways — but there are some important differences.
At A-level you have longer for the education component of the paper (an extra 15 minutes) and there is more emphasis on higherlevel skills such as analysis and evaluation. The extra time is needed because at A-level you get a longer 30-mark final question, whereas the equivalent question at AS is worth only 20 marks. The 30-mark question asks you to apply material from an Item and use your own knowledge to evaluate a viewpoint. This means you will need to develop your answer in more detail, including more discussion, more evaluation of strengths and weaknesses, and more analysis of different viewpoints. It is important, therefore, that you have a substantial amount of evidence to help you develop your in-depth discussion. You should spend about 45 minutes on your answer.
