Any school in England and Wales that offers more than 20 hours of lessons a week must be registered with the Department for Education. A recent ‘crackdown’ on unregistered schools by seven Ofsted inspectors between January and May 2016 found more than 100 suspected unregistered schools in England. This means that thousands of children are being taught in schools operating outside the supervision of the Department for Education, local authorities or Ofsted inspections.
Sir Michael Wilshaw, the chief inspector for Ofsted, said that the evidence gathered during this short period reinforced his belief that there were many more children being taught in unregistered schools than previously thought.
