Understanding the 2011 riots

What caused the 2011 riots in the UK? Were they simply a reflection of an increasingly consumerist society?

consumerism, looting, opportunism, looting as political violence

This article takes a closer look at the riots that occurred in various parts of the UK in August 2011. It has a particular focus on the act of looting, which figured largely in media accounts of the riots, and which to some was a reflection of the consumerist values of contemporary society. The authors’ interesting conclusion is that the riots were a complex series of political and social events, and that looting can justifiably be seen as a form of political violence. Also of interest are the methods used — note that this was one of the largest studies of rioting in the UK.
