The question that follows is in the style of the research methods component of an AQA AS Paper 2 exam paper. You are given 1 hour 30 minutes for this paper, which carries a total of 60 marks. Of these marks, 40 are allocated to the optional topic, with a total of 20 marks for the questions on research methods. You should therefore spend about 30 minutes on this section.
The question carrying 4 marks will typically ask you to ‘outline’ two problems, or advantages/disadvantages, or reasons concerned with a particular research method. The command word ‘outline’ means that you should give the main characteristics of something, so there is no need to write more than a few sentences for each of the two parts. For example, if the question was asking you to outline two advantages of something, you should state one advantage, then write a couple of sentences further explaining it, and/or providing an example, and then move on to the second advantage. It is a good idea to separate out the two parts of the answer.
