The Burnley project

In recent years there has been some concern—some might say a moral panic—over the religious values of young Muslims. This has focused on the possible radicalisation of young British Muslims linked to events such as the 2005 7/7 London bombings and more recently individuals travelling to Syria to join Islamist groups in the civil war. Much of the concern has been prompted by the actions of small groups or individuals and less attention has been given to actual research into the attitudes and beliefs of young British Muslims more generally.

In 2005–07 there was a research project in the northern English town of Burnley to investigate changing attitudes and values in the Muslim community (Holden 2009). A survey was conducted of 1,000 teenagers attending five schools, including one school where all the pupils were Muslim.
