In the recent past, the sociology of media analysed the influence of TV, radio and the press—the mainstream media (MSM). Now it has to examine content across many different media, across platforms and across devices. Nevertheless, the fundamental concerns and questions remain the same. What is the role of the media in society? What is the relationship of the media to social structures and power relations? And how does audience response to the media impact on the direction of social change?
