Demography in China and beyond

Important population changes are taking place in many countries of the world — but why should sociologists be interested in them?

The word ‘demography’ refers to the study of populations and the factors that affect population growth and decline. Changes in demographics have both social and economic effects, and understanding the various factors that affect population size is enormously important for social science and beyond.

The policy, introduced in 1980 and strictly enforced, was to avoid a predicted population boom and make greater economic growth possible. The Chinese government claims that the one-child policy has prevented some 400 million births, a factor which undoubtedly has contributed to China’s dramatic economic growth since the 1980s.
