Table 1 compares progression to higher education (HE) from the state and independent sector for A-level students. The final columns show the percentage, from each school/ college type, who progressed to the most selective higher education institutions (HEIs). Take a close look before attempting the questions below.

The questions test your knowledge and understanding (AO1), and also ask you to apply the evidence shown in Table 1 to answer particular questions (AO2). Finally, you will need to analyse and evaluate the data to assess the extent to which they do or do not support the view that access to higher education is influenced by previous schooling and class background (AO3). The data are useful for describing patterns relating to background, schooling, inequality and achievement and for explaining those patterns.
