Homeschooling is the ‘alternative’ educational practice of educating one’s children at home instead of at school. Usually it is undertaken by the parent(s) or carer(s) of a child, often the mother. Some children are withdrawn from formal education, but in other cases parents may decide never to send their children to school.
Most homeschooled children still take state-sanctioned exams (such as GCSEs in the UK), either returning to prepare at school or learning with tutors at home. In some countries — Germany, for example — homeschooling remains illegal, but in the UK, where it is legal, the practice is increasingly scrutinised.
