In the AQA AS Paper One you get 1 hour 30 minutes to answer six questions worth a total of 60 marks. The first four questions are likely to be worth 2, 2, 6 and 10 marks, followed by two 20-mark questions. The first four questions are therefore worth 20 marks and in the actual exam you should spend no more than 30 minutes on them. If you develop a good technique you may be able to do them in slightly less time, leaving you more time to devote to the two extended questions. The early questions are relatively straightforward and you should aim to get close to full marks on them if you can. However, watch out for the fourth, 10-mark question which requires you to develop some analysis and to ‘explain’ as well as ‘outline’.
The following is a partial AQA-style AS question with an example of an answer written by ‘Harry’ with comments on how well he has done.
