What exactly is a faith school? How many are there in the UK? Why is there apparent concern about them in the media and from other agencies?

All children in England between the ages of 5 and 16 are entitled to a free place at a state school. Most state schools have to follow the national curriculum. This is how the government describes the most common types of state school:

Community schools — these are local schools, controlled by the local council and not influenced by religious or business groups.
