As sociologists we often see research that talks about people in poverty. In this interesting article, the authors draw on research that enabled some of those in poverty to speak for themselves.
An important point is the extent to which those interviewed, while admitting that their lives were difficult, were reluctant to identify themselves as ‘poor’. The article highlights the extent to which ‘being poor’ has again come to be seen, aided by the media and many politicians, as something shameful and often self-inflicted.
