Megachurches

Megachurches, with their huge buildings holding thousands of worshippers, are a growing phenomenon around the world. What explains their success? Are they bucking the trend towards secularisation, or is what they offer just ‘religion lite’?

The term ‘megachurch’ originated in North America, where it was used to denote a Protestant church with an average weekend congregation of 2,000 or more. Around 50 megachurches in America have average weekend attendances of more than 10,000.

The Hartford Institute for Religion Research suggests that a megachurch should have the following characteristics:
