‘They did well, but not “Asian well”’

Ethnicity and aspiration

A popular stereotype is that many British Asian students are pressured by family and their culture to be successful professionals. But what are their views about coping with such aspirations?

Here Haleema Khanum describes her interviews with a small sample of British Asian students, to discuss the extent to which their educational ambitions were shaped and influenced by their family and the wider community.

Some of the differences between the groups highlight the importance of not treating members of a particular minority ethnic group as if they were homogeneous — there are often differences within, as well as between, larger groups. The material here should help avoid exam answers that focus only on the comparative lack of educational achievement by some black and minority ethnic (BME) young people. Many of those taking part in these interviews were under considerable pressure to do well, and their families had high ambitions for them.
