Mapping social class in Britain

The Great British Class Survey (GBCS) generated an enormous amount of media interest, and promised an entirely new way of mapping social class in Britain. But did it really deliver on its promises?

Colin Mills here offers a view of the unusually high level of media interest in a piece of sociological research engendered by the publication of the Great British Class Survey. He goes on to remind us that social class is a social construct, and has been both defined and measured in different ways.

This article provides a robust evaluation of the Great British Class Survey, and should help you to develop your skills of analysis and evaluation in exam questions. Note in particular the two main planks of the critique offered here (he has other criticisms), regarding the purpose and the methods of the research.
