The term ‘the Christian right’ originated in the USA. It referred to (mainly) evangelical Protestants who were alarmed by cultural and political changes that took place in the USA from the 1960s, such as the civil rights movement, anti-Vietnam war protests, the women’s liberation movement, the growth of the ‘hippy culture’ and the legalisation of abortion.
