Quantitative research into health inequalities

Sociologists usually argue that social class is linked to various inequalities in society, including inequalities in health. But how can we measure in detail the impact of other factors on health in old age?

Ronald Hudson/Fotolia

In this article Pauline McGovern provides an insight into a particular quantitative method used by many sociologists to analyse large amounts of data, such as that collected by large-scale surveys.

She explains what path analysis is, and then shows how it was used in her research into the links between former occupation and health among retired people. This article is also useful in terms of health and social policy — although taking part in cultural and leisure activities is shown to benefit the health of older people, many such activities are being affected by the austerity cuts.
